Water Point Construction

Christian Children’s Fund of Canada has helped to construct a kindergarten school for our program in the Konto area in southern Ethiopia. The villagers in Konto used to face difficulty in accessing safe drinking water.  Children and women were responsible for fetching water for home use. This often meant walking for more than two hours in search of safe and clean water. Moreover, the community around Konto was highly vulnerable to water-borne diseases.

With the help of CCFC, these challenges are being addressed with the construction of water points for the community by tapping local springs and creating access to safe drinking water in their village.

“We used to travel for hours to fetch drinking water. There is a great change now. We are very happy to have clean water in close proximity, just 15 minutes walking distance from my home. Water-borne diseases will not affect us any more,” says nine-year-old Tariku.

Tariku’s community used to suffer from lack of clean drinking water. Tariku used to travel long distances in search for water along with his family’s herds. As a result, many children like Tariku did not have enough time for study and play and their mothers also complained of not having enough time to do household chores.

Biruk is a sponsored child who also lives in the community. She is delighted with the changes in her village, as she is now able to fetch safe water close by. “There used to be quarrelling among children and elders at the previous water fetching place despite the fact that we did not have clean water. The water was so bad for us and for our livestock.

However, CCFC has given us great relief now that we have clean water. The community has sufficient water as a result there are no more fights at the water points. God bless those in Canada that are helping us with our problems.”

What We Do

We work to protect and improve the lives of children by helping them realize their basic human rights – nutritious food, clean water, health care and education. We empower children to grow up confident, know their rights, be active in the community, and take the lead in their own change.
