Stocking clinic helps children and expectant moms

Each year, more than six million children die before their fifth birthday, and nearly 300,000 expectant mothers die during pregnancy or childbirth. Basic health care is often all that is needed to save their lives. With your help, we are stocking community health centres with lifesaving equipment and supplies.

Nine-year-old Temesgen is a bright boy. Normally, he loves school, especially math, and is eager to get to class. But earlier this year, he found it difficult to focus on his school work, and to listen to his teacher. For three weeks, he sat through lessons suffering an upset stomach, abdominal cramps, diarrhoea and nausea. He was determined not to miss a class.

THE NEWLY EQUIPPED HEALTH CENTRE WILL SERVE 25,000 IN THE COMMUNITY.

In the slum where Temesgen lives in Ethiopia, almost all of the houses have walls made of mud and wood, and roofs made from sheets of corrugated iron. Many live in poverty. While the Ethiopian government is improving access to health care, many health centres still struggle to afford equipment vital to patient care. Families unable to pay for private clinics are often referred to overcrowded government hospitals. Many wait as long as two weeks to see a doctor. With the support of donors CCFC equipped a local health centre with a fridge to store vaccines, an autoclave to sterilize equipment, a hematology machine to analyze blood, and other supplies used to diagnose and treat Temesgen for giardia, a parasite often transmitted by drinking dirty water. Equipment was also provided to aid expectant mothers, including a vacuum extractor to gently help babies out, and 1,927 mothers and 875 children can now access free and improved diagnosis and care, keeping children, like Temesgen, healthy and in school.

What We Do

We work to protect and improve the lives of children by helping them realize their basic human rights – nutritious food, clean water, health care and education. We empower children to grow up confident, know their rights, be active in the community, and take the lead in their own change.
